I've always thought sustainable brands were cooler than most. Not just because of their grandiose mission to save our planet but because they have often made some pretty great fashion-forward products! But recently, I have been inspired to kick it up a notch and make more conscious Earth-friendly choices. What does conscious mean to me? Well, it means aware of and responding to one's surroundings-- to be awake. I don't want to buy sustainable just because I like the products anymore. I want to buy sustainable because I care about our Earth-- AND, well, because I like the products. Often, I feel small when I think about the world's problems and how much impact I can have. But the truth is if more of us were conscious (not only aware but responding) then all of our small, seemingly insignificant choices could add up to a very significant impact!
It started when my cousin and his girlfriend came over for dinner the other night. They were going on about a Vice News episode they had watched on HBO called "When The Earth Melts" (if you don't have HBO you can watch a preview here). It discusses how permafrost, essentially frozen dirt that covers most of our Northern Hemisphere, is beginning to melt due to rising temperatures. In these permafrost layers lives more greenhouse gases that are getting released at an exponential rate as they continue to thaw. There is one point in the episode where pure methane gas is getting released into the atmosphere and the people in the video are able to light it on fire. Fire coming from frozen layers of dirt and ice! Basically, what I'm getting at here is the Earth is important. And much like our own bodies, she's the only one we've got-- so we have to take good care of her. So with that being said I am going to keep a running list that I will update of sustainable, Earth-friendly e-tailers, retailers, brands and collections for your shopping pleasure.
